Welcome to the Episcopal Church of The Holy Communion

We're glad you are visiting with us today! You will find the prayers in the red Book of Common Prayer, the hymns in the blue Hymnal 1982, and the Scripture lessons in the bulletin, which also lists the page numbers and hymns for the service. All baptized Christians (of any denomination) are welcome to receive Communion. Please come forward to the altar rail at the appropriate time to receive the bread and wine. You may sip from the chalice or the chalice bearer will dip the bread for you.

We are a mission congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York. The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, churches that are in communion with, and find their heritage in, the Church of England. We are catholic in that we preserve the historic succession of bishops from the beginning of the Church, we worship with a set liturgy in the Prayer Book, adhere to the sacraments as the primary means of grace in the life of the Christian, as well as in retain the four-fold ministry of bishops, priests, deacons, and laity. We are protestant in our emphasis on the Word of God in Scripture, preaching, and teaching and on the guidance of the Holy Spirit on each individual. Our Prayer Book comprises a summary of all we believe in the practice of our faith.

Our congregation's mission is to "offer acceptance, comfort, and strength as we journey together with Christ."

If you would like more information about our church or its programs, speak to one of our Greeters, or Council member.

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion

In 1960 the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York decided there was a need for an Episcopal Church in the Wanakah/Lake View area, and plans were made to start a Mission church. The property at the intersection of Route #5 and the Old Lake Shore Road had been purchased and plans were drawn up for a church on that property. In 1961 the congregation moved into its permanent home, which had been built with a great deal of "hands-on" work by the members.

Over the passing years the area has passed through periods of growth and each time Holy Communion has grown a little as the area has grown. The members work hard to maintain the church and the property and contribute a great deal to the community.

We have several interesting furnishings in our building, including an Altar that is over 150 years old and was originally hard carved for a church in New York City. Other furnishings were originally installed at the Church of the Holy Communion on Humboldt Parkway in the City of Buffalo. The Baptismal Font that is over 100 years old was presented to a long-forgotten church in the city by Darwin and Isabelle Martin (owners of the Martin House and Graycliff) in memory of Isabelle's sister who died in 1898.

We are a welcoming group and are always ready to receive with pleasure any newcomers to our church family.

L.S.
